IUOE, Local 324 represents working men and women that are the fabric of the daily Michigan economy. You will see Local 324 members in many venues across the state. First and foremost, we are the “infrastructure” of each and every Michigan community. We are at the controls of the heavy equipment that is building and rebuilding Michigan’s federal, state and local road systems.
Moreover, you will find us installing the water/utility infrastructure of the expanding residential, commercial and industrial “sub-divisions” in every corner of our great state!
Our proud members are erecting the iron columns and girders on the state’s public schools, at the local community levels and the universities. The next time you are visiting or driving by an area hospital, remember that Local 324 members proudly built, expanded and helped maintain those medical facilities. Last but not least, to ensure that our country sustains a readily-available flow of natural gas and oil, Local 324 will be present building and maintaining our state’s distribution pipelines.
On the “inside” you will also find Local 324 members throughout Michigan’s industrial and utility customer sites; we are the team that has helped build and maintain everything from the automotive industry plants in the “ Motor City” to our iron-ore mining operations in the far-reaches of the Upper Peninsula.
We also represent the members that are busy as employees at one of the many Local 324 “Shop” facilities. Each and every shop facility is critical to the maintenance and supply of state of the art heavy equipment and support service equipment as well.
Local 324's core service is representing its membership. Equipped with a challenging Business Plan, Local 324 leadership represents the members in several ways. First, we commit to being a formidable presence at the collective bargaining table. We are tough, but fair when bargaining on your behalf with the employer associations. Local 324 members are deserving of market-leading wages and fringe benefits; in return, we expect that our members will provide a return value to their respective employing contractor. And, if the Local sustains its favorable market-share position, we expect that our members will continue to share in that prosperity.
Representing You
Safe working conditions, protecting work jurisdiction and employee’s working rights are also high priority service mandates that each and every Local 324 leader will strive to sustain and improve.
We expect that each and every member who carries a Local 324 membership card onto the work-site will take with him/her an unsurpassed level of pride, passion and productivity–which will send a reassuring message to our signatory contractors that we are partners in the market place for the long haul.
Once you begin working as a Local 324 member, our job has just begun. It is this Local’s commitment to back you up with a team of Directors, Business Representatives and professionals to help sustain your current and future employment.
For example, Local 324 is equipped with a world-class training facility ( Howell Education Center). Each winter (off-season) Local 324 members participate in market-place demand training opportunities. This is important in today’s market where our customers are demanding that Local 324 members bring “certification” with him/her to the site as a requisite to get on the job. So, as important as training is, Local 324 is ready to help you help yourself.
We support organizations like the “ Michigan Fair Contracting Center” (MFCC). MFCC spends its time monitoring publicly funded projects to assure all contractors are paying their workers the mandated Prevailing Wage. If the bidding playing field is level our signatory contractors have the competitive edge because of our members' skills, work ethic and efficiency.
In the marketing arena, there are two types of important representation that Local 324 provides its members: 1) we are constantly marketing (organizing) the unorganized competitors throughout the state. Remember, if you control the market-share of work, then as a union, you can take a lot of leverage to the collective bargaining table. 2) we are constantly marketing Local 324 contractor and member services to our customers–through the Local’s “Labor-Management Education Committee”. These two marketing programs are integral to the Local’s pursuit of its business plan.
